Pros

  • Excellent power under load
  • Fast electric brake
  • Clear sightline to the bit
  • Compact barrel design
  • Variable speed dial
  • Wide range of speeds

Cons

Ridgid Cordless Router Performance

  • No-Load Speed: 15000-30000 RPM
  • Collet: 1/4 in.
  • Max Bit Diameter: 1-1/2 in.
  • Motor: Brushless

At first glance, most of the obvious changes to this compact router are to the exterior. However, Ridgid made a few key updates under the hood as well. Ridgid dropped the low-end speed 5,000 RPM from 20,000 to 15,000 RPMs. This wider range of speeds allows you to shape everything from hardwoods, down to more sensitive materials like cured resins and MDF.

We’re happy to report that Ridgid retained its brushless motor and even managed to give it a little more muscle. This power increase was very evident when we put it to the test here at our shop. We alternated between a large classic round-over, dovetail, and edge trimming bits and felt very little resistance from the tool.

Taking it up a notch, we chucked up a 1/2-inch rabbet bit to see how it would handle a high-demand cut. Compared to other compact models we’ve tested, Ridgid did really well and didn’t bog down under load.

Ridgid Cordless Router Design Notes

  • Model: Ridgid R860444
  • Power Source: Ridgid 18V battery
  • Weight: 3.1 lbs (bare), 4.6 lbs (with 4.0Ah Max Output battery)
  • Height: 7.6 in.

The Ridgid R860444 weighs in at 3.1 pounds a bare tool and 4.6 pounds with a 4.0Ah Max Output battery. It stands 7.6 inches tall, and the barrel diameter is well suited for one or two-handed use.

As we mentioned before, Ridgid made some pretty notable design changes from the previous model. First off, they relocated some of the rubber overmold to the barrel grip and rearranged the controls for a more natural feel.

The power switch is now a very simple on/off style and sits directly above the micro-adjustment dial. Ridgid also moved the speed control dial to the side of the tool for easier changes on the fly.

Ridgid sticks with a standard micro depth adjustment dial. This allows for movements as small as 1/64th inches. A quick-release lever doubles as a spring-loaded release handle for making macro adjustments before you use the micro-adjust dial to fine-tune your depth.

One big area of improvement is the size of the viewing window. It’s much larger than the previous model, which greatly improves your line of sight while the tool is in use.

Along with the visibility improvements, Ridgid may have included the most hassle-free dust port that we’ve ever seen. Simply use the alignment guide on the clear plastic shield and lock it down with the tool-free set screw.

Additional Features

  • LED work light
  • Adjustable edge guide
  • Compatible with all Ridgid 18V batteries

Ridgid Cordless Router Price

This compact router has a bare tool price of $179 and is available as a kit for $278. The kit includes a single 2.0Ah battery and charger. Both options are backed with Ridgid’s Lifetime Service Agreement.

The Bottom Line

The Ridgid cordless router is a compact, easy-to-use option for light to medium-duty routing tasks. Through our testing, we found it can even handle more high demand routing tasks than some of the other DIY-focused models. While it doesn’t have as much power as a full-sized premium corded model, it’s still a great option for serious DIYers, woodworking hobbyists, and entry-level Pros.
