The Hilti Oscillating Multi-Tool Boasts High Performance Specs And Superior Vibration Control
In late 2021, Hilti released their Nuron battery lineup along with a fresh batch of new and updated tools. Among them is their first-generation Hilti Oscillating Multi-tool. However, with so many great options already on the market, why choose Hilti? We’re glad you asked!

- No-Load Speed: 10000-20000 OPM
- Oscillating Arc: 4° (+/- 2°)
- Accessory Style: Starlock Max
- Number of Settings: 6
- Noise Level: 76 dB(A)
- Vibration Level: 2.5 m/s²
Hilti utilizes a brushless motor to oscillate accessories between 10,000 and 20,000 OPM. Rather than a variable speed dial, they go with 6 electronic speed controls to select from at the rear of the tool. One of the things we like about the placement is how easy it is to check what speed you’re in without turning the tool.
The oscillation rate is excellent, and Hilti combined it with a 4° arc that’s more aggressive than most and leads to faster cutting. This larger arc and high oscillation rate also make this a very effective sanding tool.
During our testing, it sailed through our sample boards like a hot knife through butter. Moreover, thanks to the bright LEDs and narrow head design, it was easy to maintain a clean and accurate cut line.
Hilti Oscillating Multi-Tool Design Notes
- Model: Hilti SMT 6-22
- Power Source: Hilti Nuron battery
- Weight: 2.9 lbs (bare), 4.2 lbs (with B 22-55 battery)
- Length: 12-3/4 in.
As a bare tool, it weighs 2.9 pounds. Adding the recommended B 22-55 Nuron battery brings it up to 4.2 pounds. While it is compatible with any battery in the Hilti Nuron lineup, a lower profile battery is ideal for both lighter weight and balance.
At 12-3/4 inches long, it’s right in line with other models we’ve tested. The grip features a two piece rubber overmold on the top and bottom that align really nicely with my natural grip position.
When it comes to vibration, Hilti uses an isolated head design that greatly reduces felt vibrations in the handle. During our testing, we noticed a big difference compared to most of the OMT’s we’ve used. However, Fein and Makita are still our top ranking models for lowest vibration, overall.
As for accessories, Hilti’s team went for the Starlock Max interface. This tool-free system is much faster and more convenient than others on the market. Simply rotate the lever counterclockwise to release your accessory. Once your new accessory is in position, just pop the lever back down and you’re good to go!
Additional Features
You can get this oscillating multi-tool directly from Hilti for $219 as a bare tool. Kit options are available, but prices fluctuate depending on your configuration. For instance, a kit that includes a one Nuron B 22-55 battery and a charger retails for $362.50.
For our fleet and tool crib managers, Hilti also offers a Fleet Pricing program. You get a fixed monthly tool cost, no-cost repairs, and theft coverage. Under this program, the bare tool price works out to $8.25 per month.
Hilti backs this tool with their impressive 20-year warranty.
The Bottom Line
The Hilti Oscillating Multi-Tool is really impressive for a first-generation tool. Its performance specs and design are right on par with what we expect from a premium tool. Additionally, the vibration control is one of the best we’ve experienced so far. Granted, this tool does come at a higher price than most, but we believe its overall performance is hard to overshadow.
