Metabo 18V Cordless 5-Inch Angle Grinder Review

Metabo Elevates Performance and Improves Design in Latest 5-Inch Cordless Angle Grinder

Sometimes, a good idea needs a little tweaking to get just right. When it comes to power tools, combining that with a performance upgrade is a big win for Pros. That’s what we see from the Metabo WPB 18 LT BL 11-125 18V cordless 5-inch angle grinder.

Pros

  • More powerful and faster
  • Faster braking (~1 second)
  • Kickback control
  • Tool-free M-Quick wheel changes
  • More secure battery rotation lock
  • Battery cross-compatibility with 25 other brands

Cons

  • Awkward battery release
  • No variable speed selection

As we dive into the details of the Metabo WPB 18 LT BL 11-125, it’s the WPB 18 LTX BL 115 we’re comparing against. Right off the bat, we see that the RPMs increase from 9000 to 10000 for the WPB 18 LT 11-125. That should mean faster cutting and grinding, even if there’s no change in power.

Once we started using the two grinders side-by-side, it became clear there is significantly more power coming from the upgraded model, even though both sport brushless motors. According to Metabo’s data, it’s 40% more and the design team built in better overload protection.

Practically, it’s a much more versatile grinder than before. Tough tasks such as weld grinding and concrete surfacing now feel more confident. Instead of reducing the pressure you’re applying to help keep the RPMs high on some tasks, you can get down to business and grind as you do with a corded model. Compared to the best cordless small angle grinders we frequently use, Metabo’s performance is definitely in the top tier.

That said, the battery you use makes a difference. To get the high performance we experienced, be sure to use a LiHD battery.

Size and Weight

It’s typical to get a significant weight penalty when you see such a big improvement in performance from one model to the next. That’s not the case this time, and the WPB 18 LT BL 11-125 only weighs 2.6 ounces more than the model it upgrades. Without a wheel or battery, it’s 4.1 pounds.

The performance upgrade also comes with no change in size. Both models measure 12 1/8 inches from tip to tail without a battery.

Rotating Battery Position

Both of these grinders have a rotating battery. It’s helpful as you work around material from different angles but the original was a bit too easy to rotate accidentally. The updated version fixes that with a stronger detent and a release you need to press to unlock it.

Braking System and Kickback Control

While the last model had an excellent brake, the WPB 18 LT BL 11-125 has an even faster one. Expect most wheels to stop in about 1 second.

Metabo uses a combination kickback control system. There’s a mechanical safety slip clutch along with an electronic kick-out that engages when the tool senses a bind-up.

M-Quick Tool-Free Wheel Changes

One of the nice features Metabo includes is the M-Quick tool-free arbor nut. Forget reaching for a spanner wrench—this one doesn’t even have holes for it. Just hold the wheel lock on top of the tool and use your fingers to tighten or loosen the nut. It’s that easy.
