Stihl SG 51 and SG 71 Feature Functional, Smart Design

Stihl on the Backpack Sprayers

With a capacity of 3.2 and 4.75 gals. respectively, the SG 51 and SG 71 manual backpack sprayers were developed with the operator in mind. Every detail, from the lightweight construction to the separate pressure reservoir that requires less pumping to the interchangeable pump lever for left or right operation, makes these units easy to operate.

What’s the Big Deal?

The main talking point surrounding the Stihl Backpack Sprayers is the upgraded feature set. While these two new models aren’t battery-powered like the Milwaukee Switch Tank, Stihl has designed both the SG 51 and SG 71 in such a way that you likely won’t miss the battery power.

We like that both Stihl Backpack Sprayers feature an interchangeable pump lever. You can mount it on either side of the sprayer. Lefties and righties can both keep consistent pressure in the tank without having to take the sprayer off your back to pump it up.

These sprayers also feature a separate pressure reservoir. Stihl separated the reservoir from the main tank, ensuring that only a portion of your fluid gets pressurized. This design requires less pumping to repressurize the reservoir. It also lets you refill the tank without requiring depressurization.

The Stihl Backpack Sprayers also include a variety of upgrades designed to extend the life of the sprayers. An internal pump design reduces the likelihood of damage. Stihl has welded the connection between the tank and the base and upped the leak protection by using Viton fluoroelastomers sprayer seals and o-rings. Viton claims their seals and o-rings retain their flexibility, shape, and seal when exposed to chemicals and even high temperatures.

The spray hose now comes with thicker walls, and the wand features a brass tube casing to resist heat-induced deformation. Stihl also reinforced the shut-off valve trigger, making it stronger and more durable.
